VIEW NOW! SAGE General Manager Joseph McNeil Jr. on Jane Fonda’s Fire Drill Fridays!

On Friday, May 21, SAGE General Manager Joseph McNeil, Jr. joined Jane Fonda and panelists Tim Donaghy and Colette Pichon Battle, Esq. for a powerful discussion about fossil fuel racism:

what it is, why it matters, and what we can do to end it.

As GreenPeace states, the fossil fuel industry is deeply embedded in our nation’s legacy of systemic racism. Every stage of coal, oil, and gas production disproportionately harms Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities — and makes all of us worse off.

“Because of the climate crisis, we, you, and I, are truly the last generations that can achieve this [climate justice]. If we don’t rise to the challenge, we will have failed all future generations and the planet,” said Jane Fonda. “We are rising to the challenge.”

Discussing the experiences of Indigenous people in the U.S. and the history of exploitation and fossil fuel racism that Native peoples have endured, Joseph McNeil, Jr. spoke the compelling words that “where we’ve been gives us guidance to where we are going for the next generations.”

“Racism of all types – especially fossil fuel racism – impacts everyone, and doing away with it helps all of us. We must know that all of us deserve a world where everyone has a good life, where our fundamental needs are met…this is a vision that we’re fighting for and now is the time.”
